Pinch pots are the oldest and most versatile of all functional art. Yet as simple as some seem, there are numerous guidelines to follow to make a well-crafted piece. Before creating the pot, the clay must be rid of air bubbles by means of wedging or kneading. Upon releasing the trapped air, the clay must be rolled into a sphere. From here, create a hole in the center of the clay ball with a thumb, making sure to leave at least 1/4 of an inch for the bottom of the pinch pot. Now comes the pinching. Press and (gently) stretch the clay between the thumb and index finger, working it up and out from the sphere. When finally molded the desired shape, smooth, texture, and glaze the pinch pot. After a trip to the kiln, the clay pot will be finished.
